A Happy New Year! In Japan, we decorate the house to welcome the New Year’s god, Toshigami with Shogatsu-kazari:
Kadomatsu (gate pine) are usually decorated in front of the entrance or at the gate for the gods to find our home smoothly
Shimakazari are decorated either at the entrance, on the kamidana (altar), or in the tokonoma (alcove) to indicate that the place is sacred and suitable for Toshigami
Kagamimochi (mirror-shaped rice cake) is derived from the circular mirror used as a dwelling place for the gods during Shinto rituals. The two tiers of round rice cakes represent the sun and the moon and also it is to wish for piling up another year of happiness
The Japanese year begins on New Year’s Day with the New Year’s greeting to the gods, who come to bring happiness and health for the year ahead.　Our pair of seasonal canelés for this month, “Yuzu” and “Kuri-kinton” are available from the 6th of January.　Yuzu canelés are with apricot mixed dough and decorated with our homemade jam on top. The fresh sweetness of yuzu would amuse you.　Kuri-kinton canelés are with sweet potato paste inside, decorated with caramelized chestnuts and golden leaves. People eat Kuri-kinton to wish for good wealth. Please enjoy the mild sweetness.　Our shops will be back in business from Friday, January 6th for the New Year. あけましておめでとうございます。日本では「年神様」をお迎えするためのお正月飾りがあります。門松は年神様が迷わず家にやってくるための目印で、門の前や玄関先に飾ります。しめ飾りは、その場所が「年神様にふさわしい神聖な場所」ということを表し、玄関や神棚、床の間に飾ります。鏡餅は、神事の際に神様が宿るところとして用いられる円形の鏡が由来で、大小2段の丸餅は太陽と月、それから円満に年を重ねるという意味も込められています。日本の一年は、元旦にやってきて、一年の幸せや健康をもたらしてくれる年神様へのおもてなしからはじまるのですね。1月の季節のカヌレは 「栗きんとん」と「ゆず」が、1月6日(金)よりお目見えです。「ゆず」は杏の生地に自家製の柚子ジャムを絞りました。爽やかな酸味と香りが広がります。「栗きんとん」はさつまいもの餡を入れ、栗の甘露煮に金粉を散らしました。お節料理にも欠かせない栗きんとんは金運上昇の願いが込められています。ほくほくやさしい甘さの一品をお楽しみください。新年は1月6日(金)からオープンします。今年もよろしくお願いいたします。
