Hands grow numb with cold while writing letters these days. Soon, we will be tied up writing seasonal greetings. The 1st of December cannot be missed when we talk about the postal service in Japan as it is the day that the very first postcards were issued in 1873. It needed to be folded in half and this type of official postcards are very unique and rare in the world even till now. On the 1st of December 1935, New Year’s postcard stamps were issued with a picture of Mt. Fuji and 14 years later, also on the same day in 1949, the first New Year’s postcards with lottery were issued. The first prize was a sewing machine back then. The winning prize of 2019 includes the invitation tickets to Tokyo Olympics. It is interesting to see how the times have changed. Our pair of seasonal canelés for this month, “Meli-melo” and “Coconuts Chocolat” are available from 1st of December. Meli-melo canelés are named after a French word meaning mishmash in English. It is very flavorful and rich with various fruits preserved in rum on top. Coconuts chocolat canelés are baked with dark chocolate inside of the chocolat dough mixed with roasted coconuts. Please enjoy the taste contrast of bitterness and sweetness.

お便りを書く手がかじかむようになりました。クリスマスカードや年賀状の準備に忙しくなる頃でしょうか。12月1日は日本の郵便の歴史を語るうえで欠かせない日です。日本最初の郵便はがきは1873年(明治6年)の12月1日に発行され、形状は現在の往復はがきのような二つ折りで、普通はがきとしては世界にあまり例がないそうです。1935年(昭和10年)12月1日には初の年賀切手が発行され、図案は富士山でした。お年玉年賀はがきが登場したのはその14年後の1949年(昭和24年)12月1日で、特等はミシン。2019年の商品には「東京2020オリンピックへの招待」が含まれているそうで、日本の時代背景を垣間見ることができます。12月の季節のカヌレは 「メリメロ」と「ココナッツショコラ」が、12月1日(土)よりお目見えです。「メリメロ」はフランス語でごちゃまぜという意味です。ラム種漬けの果実がたっぷりのった華やかな一品です。「ココナッツショコラ」はショコラ生地の中にローストしたココナッツを入れ、ダークの板チョコを中に入れて焼き上げました。ほろ苦さと甘さのコントラストをお楽しみください。
